Critical Thinking Blog Assignement #1

Hello All,

My name is Nicole Lalla and I'm a psychology major here at LaGuardia and this is my last semester. As far as my educational goals, I am continuing my education by attending a 4 year school, either Lehman or John Jay College once I finish up here. As far as my career plans, I'm still undecided what field of work I want to go into. Even though I still have time to think about what I want to do with my career, I still need to make a choice and at least narrow down my options to at least two. As of right now my choices include either becoming a social worker or a guidance counsoler or even doing police work and becoming a cop or a correctional officer.

Prompt: "In 1959, the British scientist and novelist C.P Snow argued that there was almost an unbridgeable divide between "the two cultures" of the humanities and the sciences" ("The Two Cultures" 9).

In reply to this prompt looking at myself, I would say I lean more towards the humanities side versus the science side. I have always been interested in the way of the "human being", as in why do we do the things we do as Humans. The study of the human being from different traditions, beliefs and aspects of life all interest me. Humanities also deals with the study of literature, art and philosophy. For example, the reason for me choosing my major as psychology is because of the thought of the human mind and how it functions. Seeing the reasoning behind someones behavior and the way the mind works is absolutely amazing to me.  Humanities in general deals with the human being and the state of being human so with that being said psychology has a part within that. From experience and what I have experienced so far throughout my life, this is what makes me more humanities. From a everyday point of view and what I go through deals more along the lines of the humanities than the science.

Just over looking Humanities and the meaning behind it, it basically deals with the state of being human. In other words dealing with an interest in human-centered values and understanding, along with a divinely-ordered universe according to the handout which was given to us the first week of class. Just by even taking classes here at Laguardia (psychology classes) it has an affect towards me and why I am considered a more humanities type of person. As I stated earlier everyday life can have a huge effect on a person and what life hands it them self.
